Dual-phase evolution

Dual-phase evolution happens when something changes in two different stages. This could happen with animals, plants and even rocks. For example, you may have heard of an animal called a caterpillar: they have a life cycle that includes two different stages. First, they are like a little worm, and then they turn into a beautiful butterfly. This is an example of dual-phase evolution. Rocks can also evolve in two stages. For example, some types of rocks start as sediment that is layered on top of each other over centuries. Eventually, the layers become so tightly packed that they turn into something completely different – a completely different type of rock called an igneous rock. Dual-phase evolution is an important part of how nature works.
