ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Duhamel plan

Alright kiddo, have you ever had to move all of your toys from one room to another? It can be pretty hard to carry everything in one trip, right? Well, imagine if you had to move all of your toys to a new room every day for a week! That would be a lot of work, wouldn't it?

Now, imagine if your parents had a special plan to help you move your toys more easily. They could split the work up over the week so you only had to move a little bit each day. That way, it wouldn't be so hard and you could still play with your toys in the meantime.

That's kind of like what the Duhamel Plan is! It's a special plan that helps people who have to move their poop through their intestines. Sometimes, when people get sick, their intestines don't work like they should, so they need a special plan to help them poop regularly.

The Duhamel Plan breaks it up into smaller parts, kind of like moving your toys a little at a time. Doctors can make a new opening in the person's belly and connect it to their intestines. Then they can direct the poop through this new opening so that it doesn't stay in the person's intestines and make them sick.

It might sound a little bit weird, but it's actually a really helpful thing for people who need it! The Duhamel Plan helps them live a more comfortable life and helps their digestive system work better.
