ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Duopoly (broadcasting)

Okay kiddo, have you ever played with a friend and you both have a toy that other kids don't have? Well, imagine if these toys were the only two toys in the playground, and all the other kids wanted to play with one of them. That's kind of like what a duopoly is!

In the world of TV and radio, there are sometimes only two companies that do most of the broadcasting. They are kind of like the only two toy companies in the playground. Since they have the most toys (or channels) that people like, they can charge a lot of money for those toys. They might even try to stop anyone else from coming in and offering other toys that people might like.

Sometimes, these two companies might even work together to make things harder for other kids who want to play with different toys. That's called collusion and it's not very nice.

So even though a duopoly might seem like it's cool to have all the toys, it's not really fair to the other kids who just want to play with something different.
