ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Dysarthria

Dysarthria means that a person has trouble speaking clearly or making their sounds the way they should. It’s like when you try to say a word, but it doesn’t sound the way it’s supposed to.

The trouble speaking clearly happens because the muscles needed for speaking are not working properly. These muscles are in your mouth, lips, tongue, and throat.

Someone with dysarthria could sound like they are mumbling, slurring their words, or speaking too quietly or too loudly. Sometimes they can’t say certain sounds, make a lot of mistakes when they talk, or speak slowly.

There are many different reasons why someone might have dysarthria. Some people are born with it, while others develop it later in life because of an injury, a disease that affects the brain or nervous system, or as a side effect of medications.

If someone you know has dysarthria, there are things that you can do to help them. It’s important to be patient and understanding when they are speaking. You can also try to help them communicate by asking yes or no questions, using visual aids, or writing things down.
