ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Earth potential rise

Okay kiddo, so you know how electricity is all around us, right? Well sometimes, when a lot of electricity is flowing through the ground, like during a lightning storm or when a big machine like a wind turbine or power plant is working, it can make the ground itself electrically charged.

This is kind of like how if you rub your socks on the carpet, you can get a shock when you touch something metal. The electricity builds up and wants to go somewhere.

But the thing is, sometimes people or animals might be standing on or near the ground where the electricity is flowing. And if too much electricity flows through them, it can be dangerous or even deadly.

So what scientists do is they measure how much electricity is flowing through the ground, and they make sure to keep people and animals safe by using things like rubber mats and special shoes to block the electricity. This is called earth potential rise - measuring how much the ground's electrical charge can rise during a storm or when big machines are working, to keep everyone safe.

Basically, it's like making sure you wear rubber boots when playing in a puddle during a thunderstorm, so the electricity doesn't flow through you and zap you. Make sense?
