ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Earthquake light

Earthquake light is when the sky or the ground starts to glow during an earthquake. It's like when your T-Shirt glows in the dark, but instead of just your shirt, the whole sky or ground starts to glow.

Scientists aren't really sure why this happens, but they think it's because the rocks underground are rubbing against each other really hard, which creates electricity. This electricity then travels up to the surface and makes the sky or ground light up like a flashlight.

Sometimes, earthquake lights can happen before or after the earthquake actually happens. It's like a little warning sign that an earthquake might be coming or that one just happened. But don't worry, even though it might look really cool or scary, earthquake lights don't actually hurt anyone.

Scientists are still studying earthquake lights to learn more about why they happen and what they might tell us about earthquakes. So, the next time you see the sky or the ground glowing during an earthquake, remember that it's just nature doing something really cool!
