East Germany

East Germany, also called the German Democratic Republic (GDR), was a country that used to exist in Europe in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. It was a communist country, which means that the government controlled many things, like what people did and what they said. East Germany was separated from West Germany by a wall, called the Berlin Wall, and the government of East Germany did not want anyone to leave. This meant that ordinary East German citizens were not allowed to visit West Germany, and no one from West Germany was allowed to visit East Germany. East Germany was eventually taken over by West Germany in 1990, and the country no longer exists.
