ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Economy of the Confederate States of America

Ok kiddo, do you remember playing with toy money and toy stores? Well, the economy of the Confederate States of America was a lot like that. When the Confederacy was formed, they knew they needed their own money since they were making their own rules now. This money was called Confederate money and it looked different from the money used in the Union (the United States) because it had pictures of people who were important to the Confederacy on it.

But, the economy of the Confederacy had some problems. They didn't have as much industry as the Union, which meant they couldn't make as many things like guns and machinery. They also didn't have as many big cities, so trade was harder for them too. The Confederacy relied on farming and they had a lot of land to do it, but they relied heavily on slave labor.

You know how hard it is to plant and harvest a garden in the summer? Now imagine doing that for a whole farm! The Confederacy had a lot of farms and plantations, but since they relied on slaves to do the work, they didn't have to pay any workers. This meant they didn't need to make as much money as they would've if they had to pay workers. But, as we know, slavery is not a good thing and it caused a lot of problems for the Confederacy, like some people boycotting their products.

The Confederacy also didn't have a central bank, which meant they couldn't control how much money was in circulation. This made their money lose its value very quickly. It became harder and harder to buy things because the money wasn't worth as much.

So, the economy of the Confederacy had a lot of problems. They relied too heavily on farming and slavery, and had trouble with trade and industry. This made it hard for them to keep up with the United States, which had a bigger and stronger economy.
