Ectopic pregnancy

An ectopic pregnancy happens when a fertilized egg grows outside of the uterus (where babies usually grow). It can grow in other places like the fallopian tubes, the ovary, or even the stomach.

When a sperm meets an egg, they join together and create an embryo. This little embryo needs to travel through the fallopian tubes into the uterus to grow into a baby. However, sometimes the egg gets stuck in the tube and starts growing there. The tube is not made to hold the growing baby, and it can be very dangerous for the mother.

An ectopic pregnancy can cause pain in the lower belly or pelvic area, and bleeding. A doctor can find out if someone has an ectopic pregnancy through a special test and an ultrasound.

Unfortunately, an ectopic pregnancy cannot grow into a baby and can be very dangerous for the mother. If left untreated, it can even be life-threatening. The good news is that doctors can treat it with medicine or surgery to remove the pregnancy.

It's important to remember that ectopic pregnancies can happen to anyone who can get pregnant, and it's not anyone's fault. If you ever have pain or bleeding during pregnancy, it's important to talk to a doctor right away.
