Edge-preserving filtering

Edge-preserving filtering is like putting a special pair of glasses on a picture. Imagine you have a picture of a pretty flower. When you put the glasses on the picture, it makes the details of the flower pop out more, while also smoothing out any blurriness.

The filter works by being able to detect the edges of objects in a picture. Once it knows where the edges are, it can apply the filter only to the areas that are not part of the edges, keeping those edges crisp and clear. Think of it like coloring in a picture with a white crayon, but only coloring in the areas that are not the outline of the object.

This type of filter is especially helpful when you want to smooth out a picture or eliminate noise, but you don't want to lose the important details of the picture. It can be used in many different applications, like cleaning up old photographs or making sure medical images are clear and easy to read.
