ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Edward Colston

Edward Colston was a wealthy businessman from England who lived in the 1600s. He was famous for his business deals and for donating a lot of money to good causes. At the same time, however, he was also involved in the slave trade, buying and selling people for his own profit. He believed in the idea that people from Africa and other parts of the world could be bought and sold like things. People were treated badly when they were bought and sold, and it was an awful thing to do. After he died, people built a statue in his honor, remembering the good things he did with his money, but forgetting about the bad things. Recently, people have been talking about his slave trade connections, and the statue has been removed from the city.
