ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Effect of Brexit on Gibraltar

Imagine that you and your best friend, let's call him Timmy, have a special treehouse that you both share. The treehouse is located on your neighbor's property, but your neighbor is okay with you both playing there as long as you follow the rules.

Now, one day, Timmy's family decides to move to a different town far away. You may miss Timmy and it will be sad not to play in the treehouse together anymore. But, there's also a bigger problem. When Timmy leaves, the neighbor who owns the property might think that since Timmy is gone, only you get to play in the treehouse now. That might be true, but there is also a chance that the neighbor might think of different rules for the treehouse that you may not like or agree with.

Now, let's talk about Gibraltar. Gibraltar is a very small, special place that belongs to the United Kingdom but is located on the southern tip of Spain. People who live there speak English and have British citizenship, but they are surrounded by Spanish land. Because of this, Gibraltar has special rules in place for trading and traveling with the other countries in Europe.

When the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union (EU), this affected Gibraltar too. The EU and the UK have different rules for trade, travel, and other important things. Now that the UK is leaving the EU, Gibraltar is worried that they will not be able to make their own rules like they used to, and may have to follow the new rules the UK and EU come up with. This could make things difficult for the people who live in Gibraltar and those who travel there.

So, just like you and Timmy's treehouse, Brexit might affect the special rules that Gibraltar has in place, and the people who live there may not have as much control over what happens next.
