ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Effective half-life

When we have something in our body, like medicine, it takes time for our body to get rid of it completely. The effective half-life is like a magic number that tells us how long it takes for half of that medicine to leave our body.

To understand this, let's pretend we have a bag with 100 marbles inside. If we take out 50 marbles, we now have 50 left in the bag. If we take out another 25 marbles, we'll have 25 left in the bag. We keep taking out half of what's left until we only have one marble left.

The effective half-life works kind of like that. When we take medicine, we can measure how much of it is in our body at different times. If the medicine has an effective half-life of 10 hours, that means that after 10 hours, half of the medicine we took has left our body. After another 10 hours, half of what's left has left our body again. This repeats until there's very little medicine left in our body.

Knowing the effective half-life of a medicine can help doctors decide how often we need to take it or if they need to change the dose. It can also help them figure out how long the medicine will take to completely leave our body.
