ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Eikonal equation

Hey there kiddo, let me tell you about something called the eikonal equation.

Imagine you are in a race and you want to find the fastest route to the finish line. What do you do? Well, you try different paths and see which one gets you there the quickest. But what if you have a map that tells you the speed of each path? This would make things a lot easier, right?

The eikonal equation is like that map. It gives you the speed of a wave traveling through a medium. Waves could be all sorts of things like sound, light, or even ripples in water. This equation helps you figure out how quickly a wave moves through different types of materials.

So, if we go back to the race example, instead of trying different paths blindly, we could use the eikonal equation to figure out which path would allow us to move the quickest. Similarly, the eikonal equation helps scientists and engineers determine the fastest route for waves to travel in different mediums.

Hope that helps you understand a bit about the eikonal equation!
