ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Elective monarchy

An "elective monarchy" is like a special type of game where grown-up people choose which other grown-up person they want to be their leader or king or queen. It's like a big vote where they choose who they think would do a good job or who they like the most.

Usually, being a king or queen is something that you are born into, like being part of a special family. But with an "elective monarchy", everyone gets a chance to be considered for the position and the people who are allowed to vote are usually important or powerful people in the country.

It's a bit like playing a game where everyone lined up to take turns being the leader, and they voted on who did the best job. This way, they can choose the person who they think would be the best leader, even if they are not part of the special family that usually becomes the king or queen.
