ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Electret microphone

An electret microphone is like a magic ear that hears all the sounds around it and turns them into electricity that we can use. It's called "electret" because it has a special material inside it that stays charged with electricity even when it's not plugged into anything.

So when you talk or sing or make any noise near the electret microphone, the sound waves travel through the air and hit a tiny little plate inside the microphone. This plate is so small that you can't see it, but it moves back and forth really fast when it gets hit by sound waves.

This movement creates a little electrical signal that goes out of the microphone and into a computer or other device. The computer changes the electrical signal into a digital signal that it can use to record your voice or music or whatever else you're making noise about.

So basically, an electret microphone is like a secret ear that captures everything around it and makes it possible to listen to and record sound in lots of different ways.
