Electrokinetic remediation

Electrokinetic remediation is a process where scientists and engineers use electricity to clean up polluted soil or water.

Imagine you spilled some juice on the floor and it seeped into the carpet. It's hard to clean it up just by scrubbing it with a cloth, right? But if you use an electric vacuum cleaner, it can suck the liquid out of the carpet much more easily.

Now, picture the polluted soil as the carpet and the juice as harmful chemicals like heavy metals or oil. By placing electrodes (like little wires) into the soil, scientists can apply an electric current that helps the harmful chemicals move out of the soil and into a cleaning solution.

The electric current creates something called an "electro-osmotic flow." This flow helps to move the harmful chemicals towards the electrodes, almost like a magnet. Once the chemicals reach the electrodes, they are removed from the soil and put into a cleaning solution.

Over time, continuous electrokinetic remediation can remove more and more of the harmful chemicals, leaving the soil or water cleaner and safer for people, animals, and plants to live in.
