ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Electronic flight instrument system

Imagine you’re flying in an airplane and you want to know where you’re going and how fast you’re going. The electronic flight instrument system (EFIS) is like a big computer screen that tells the pilot important information about the flight.

The EFIS shows the pilot a lot of stuff, like how high the plane is flying (called altitude), how fast it’s going (called airspeed), and in which direction it’s heading (called course). It also shows other important information such as the status of the engine, fuel levels, and temperature readings.

The EFIS uses automated sensors to collect information about the airplane’s movement and displays it on the screen in the cockpit. These sensors can detect a lot of things, like the plane's angle, how fast the plane is moving up or down, and how fast it's going left or right.

Simply put, the electronic flight instrument system is a fancy computer screen that tells the pilot everything he or she needs to know about the airplane and its movements while it's up in the sky.
