Elijah Abel
Elijah Abel was a really cool guy who lived a long time ago. He was born in 1810 in Maryland, which is a place in the United States. Elijah was born into a family that had been slaves, which means they didn't have their freedom.
When he was a young boy, his family moved to the state of New York, where people didn't have to be slaves anymore. Elijah was really lucky because he lived in a place where he could go to school and learn. He worked really hard and became a skilled carpenter, which means he could build things with his hands.
When Elijah was older, he joined a church called The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In this church, he learned about Jesus and all the important things he taught. Elijah loved his church and wanted to help it grow.
But there was a problem. Some people in the church believed that only white people could hold important positions and have certain responsibilities. They thought that people with dark skin, like Elijah, couldn't do those things. This was called racism and it was really unfair.
But Elijah didn't let that stop him. He knew that he was just as good as anyone else in the church, no matter what color his skin was. He wanted to show everyone that he could be a leader too.
So Elijah worked really hard and became the first Black man to be ordained, which means he was given special responsibilities in the church. He was even made a priest, which was a really important role.
Elijah traveled a lot and helped spread the teachings of his church. He told people about Jesus and how we should all love and help each other, no matter what we look like.
