ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Emeritus

Emeritus is a special word that we usually use for someone who has worked a long time in a job or profession, like a teacher or a professor. It's like a special title that they get when they retire or stop working after a long career of many years.

So, imagine that your teacher, Mrs. Smith, has been teaching at your school for a really long time. She's taught so many students and helped them learn and grow. She never missed a day of school and always prepared amazing lessons. Now, she's decided that she wants to retire, which means she won't be your teacher anymore.

But even though she's retiring and won't be teaching at your school anymore, she gets the title of "emeritus" added to her name. That means that even though she's not working anymore, everyone will still remember all the amazing work she did and how much she helped her students. It's like a way of saying "thank you" for all the years of hard work and dedication.

So, whenever you see Mrs. Smith after she retires, you can call her "Mrs. Smith, Emeritus" to show her how much you appreciate all she's done. And even though she's not your teacher anymore, you'll always remember the great things she taught you.
