Once upon a time, there was a big place called Emeryville. A long time ago, before cars and houses and buildings, there were some people who lived in Emeryville. These people were called the Ohlone people. They used to live in a big village called the Emeryville Shellmound.
The Emeryville Shellmound was a big pile of shells and other things that people used to eat. The Ohlone people would gather them from the nearby bay and put them in a big pile. They would also build their homes on top of this pile.
The Emeryville Shellmound was very important to the Ohlone people. It was their home and also a sacred place where they had celebrations and ceremonies. They believed that their ancestors were buried there and wanted to honor them by keeping the shellmound safe.
But, over time, other people came to Emeryville and they didn't understand the importance of the shellmound to the Ohlone people. They started to take the shells from the mound and build houses and buildings on top of it. This made the Ohlone people very sad and angry because they were losing their sacred place.
Today, people have learned about the importance of the Emeryville Shellmound and are working to protect what's left of it. They want to keep it safe for the Ohlone people and honor their ancestors who lived there a long time ago.
