ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Emil Fackenheim

Emil Fackenheim was a Jewish philosopher who thought a lot about the Holocaust, which was a really bad time when a lot of Jewish people were killed. He believed that we can't ever forget what happened during the Holocaust because it was so important and so terrible.

Fackenheim believed that the Jewish people should continue to live and practice their religion, despite what had happened to them. He said that this was a way to resist the Nazis and show that they could not be defeated.

Another important idea that Fackenheim had was the concept of the "614th commandment". The Jewish religion has a set of rules called the 613 commandments, which are the things that God told the Jewish people to do in the Torah. Fackenheim believed that there was another commandment that came out of the Holocaust: "Never forget". He thought that this new commandment was just as important as the others and should be followed by all Jewish people.

Overall, Emil Fackenheim was a very important Jewish philosopher who thought a lot about how the Jewish people could recover from the Holocaust and make sure that it never happened again.
