ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Empty semigroup

Hey kiddo,

Have you ever played with Legos before? Imagine you have a big container of Legos in front of you, but there are no actual Legos in the container yet. That container is like an empty semigroup!

Just like a container has the potential to hold Legos, an empty semigroup has the potential to hold elements (which are kind of like Legos, but in math). But until you actually put some elements in the semigroup, it remains empty.

So, basically an empty semigroup is like an empty toy box. It's there and ready for you to fill it up with toys (or math elements, in this case), but it doesn't actually have anything inside of it just yet.
