ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

English Place-Name Society

Okay, so you know how every place has a name, like your house or your school? Well, some places have been around for a really long time, like way before your parents were born or even your grandparents! Back then, people didn't write down the names of places, they would just say them out loud and everyone would remember.

The English Place-Name Society is a group of people who study and write down these old place names so that we can remember them forever. They look at old maps and documents to figure out what the place names used to be and what they meant. Sometimes, the name would describe what the place looked like, like "Green Hill" for a hill covered in grass. Other times, it would describe what happened there, like "Mill Lane" for a street where there used to be a mill.

It's kind of like being a detective to solve a mystery! By understanding these old place names, we can learn about the history and culture of the places where we live. Plus, it's just really interesting to know what our town used to be called hundreds of years ago.
