English place names in Barbados

Okay, so when people talk about where they live or where they're going in Barbados, they often use a lot of English words that might be a bit weird to you. These are actually the names of different places in Barbados, just like how your home or school has its own name.

But why are they in English? Well, a long time ago, Barbados used to be a British colony. That means that England owned Barbados and a lot of people from England came to live here. They brought their language and culture with them, including the names of different places.

For example, there's a place called Bridgetown. This is the capital city of Barbados, and it was named after a lady called Lady Bridget who was married to a man who owned a lot of land there.

Another example is Holetown, which used to be a place where ships would come in and unload things. The big hole where the ships would anchor is still there today, and people named the town after it.

So even though Barbados is its own country now, it still has a lot of English influence. The place names are just one example of that.
