Entropy in thermodynamics and information theory

Entropy describes the level of "disorder" or "randomness" in a system. Imagine you have a toybox with all your toys in. If you organize all the toys nicely in different compartments, there is very little entropy. But if you just throw all the toys in the box without any order, there is a lot of entropy.

Now, let's talk about thermodynamics. In thermodynamics, entropy is a measure of how much heat energy can't be used to do work. When you heat up a cup of tea, some of the energy is lost to the environment and can't be used to do work (like boiling water to make steam for an engine). This means that the entropy has increased - there is more disorder and less useful energy.

Information theory also uses the concept of entropy, but it refers to the level of uncertainty in a message or data. Let's say you want to send a message to your friend, but you can only use a certain number of letters. The message "I love you" has less entropy than "Jt fouf zpv". This is because "I love you" is a familiar phrase that carries little uncertainty, whereas "Jt fouf zpv" is meaningless and could have many possible interpretations.

Overall, entropy is a way of measuring disorder or uncertainty in different systems, whether it's in thermodynamics or information theory.
