ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Environmental Accounts

Imagine you have a big box filled with a lot of toys. You love playing with them every day, and sometimes you even share them with your friends. But every time you do this, you take some toys out of the box, and they never go back in. Your box starts to look empty, and you realize that if you keep taking toys out without putting any back in, the box will be empty soon.

This box is like the environment. We use many resources from nature to make things we need to live, such as food, water, and energy. But if we keep using them without giving back, nature will run out of them, and we won't have anything left. That's where environmental accounts come in.

Environmental accounts are like a list of all the toys in your box. They help us understand how much of each natural resource we use, how we use them, and how much we have left. They also help us understand how much we pollute nature, such as with air and water pollution, and how much we need to clean it up.

Just like you keep track of your toys, we keep track of nature's resources in environmental accounts. By doing this, we can make sure we use them wisely and don't waste them. We can also make sure we protect nature so it can continue to give us the resources we need to live.
