ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Equine podiatry

Equine podiatry involves taking care of the feet of horses, just like how your parents take care of your feet. Horses have four feet and each foot has something called a hoof. It's kind of like a hard "shoe" made out of a tough material called keratin that protects the soft tissue inside the foot.

A lot can go wrong with a horse's feet, just like your parents might take you to a doctor if something is wrong with your feet. Horses might get something called lameness, which means they can't walk properly, or they might get something called an abscess, which is like an ouchie inside the hoof. Sometimes they might even get a disease called laminitis, which can be very serious and painful.

To take care of a horse's feet, a veterinarian trained in equine podiatry will use special tools to examine the hoof and make sure everything looks healthy. They might also trim the hoof or even put special shoes on it to help keep the horse's foot in good shape.

Just like you might need to wear special shoes for sports or your parents might give you a special lotion to keep your feet soft, horses might also need special treatments to keep their feet healthy. An equine podiatrist will work closely with the horse's owner to make sure they're doing everything they can to keep the horse's feet strong and happy.
