ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Erev Rav

Okay kiddo, so imagine there's a big group of people who are traveling with the Israelites, the ones who Moses led out of Egypt. Some of them weren't really part of the Israelites, but they wanted to come along anyways. These people were known as the "erev rav" which means "mixed multitude" in Hebrew.

Now, the problem was that some of these erev rav folks didn't really believe in the same things as the Israelites. They didn't follow the same laws or trust in God the way the Israelites did. And sometimes they caused trouble or tried to lead the Israelites away from their beliefs.

So the term "erev rav" kinda became like a nickname for people who were seen as not really part of the Jewish community, or who weren't trustworthy. But not everyone agrees on who exactly these people were, or how much they affected the Israelites. It's a topic that still gets debated today.
