ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Error analysis (linguistics)

When we talk, sometimes we make mistakes without even realizing it! Just like when you accidentally say "thootpaste" instead of "toothpaste" or "bafroom" instead of "bathroom." These are called errors. In linguistics, we study these errors to understand how our brain works when we communicate.

An error analysis in linguistics is when we look at all the mistakes that people make when they speak or write a language, and we try to figure out what caused those mistakes. For example, if someone is learning English and they say "I goed to the store," we know "goed" is not correct, but we wonder why they said it. Did they hear someone else say it? Did they mix up the past tense with another tense?

We can also use this analysis to help people learn a language better. By studying common errors people make, we can create teaching methods that target those specific mistakes. It's like having a secret weapon to help us learn a language faster and more accurately!
