ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Error message

Have you ever had a computer or a phone tell you "error, error" and you don't know what that means? Well, let's imagine you are playing with a toy and you are trying to do something but it's not working. Maybe you are trying to stack blocks on top of each other but they aren't staying together well. This is kind of like what an error message is - it's your computer's way of telling you that it's having trouble doing something you asked it to do.

Just like you might need to find the right way to balance the blocks, a computer needs to find the right way to do what you asked it to do. Sometimes, it can't do that because there's a problem. This could be because the computer doesn't understand what you're asking it to do, or maybe there's a mistake in the program you're using, or something else went wrong.

When there is an error, your computer will show you a message to tell you what's going on. Sometimes this message will be really technical and hard to understand, but other times it might explain in simpler terms what happened and how you can fix it. It's kind of like a clue that helps you figure out what went wrong and how to make things work better.
