ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Ettingshausen effect

Have you ever played with magnets and noticed how they push and pull each other? That's because of something called magnetism. Now, imagine that you have an object that is really cold, like a block of ice. When things get really cold, they start to behave in unusual ways, especially when they are near magnets.

Scientists discovered that when a really cold object is near a strong magnetic field, it can create electricity. This is called the Ettingshausen effect. Imagine a toy car that you push across the floor. The car moves because you are pushing it with your hand. But imagine that the car could move all by itself just because it was near a powerful magnet. That's kind of what happens with the Ettingshausen effect.

So, in summary, things that are really cold can create electricity when they are near magnets, and this is called the Ettingshausen effect. It's kind of like magic, but science explains it!
