Etymology of Edinburgh

Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland. A long, long time ago, before Edinburgh was even called Edinburgh, there were some people who lived in that area. These people spoke a language called Cumbric, which is not spoken anymore.

Later on, when the Angles came to the area, they spoke a language called Old English. They named the place Eiden's burh, which meant "Eiden's fortress."

As time went by, the name changed a bit; first it became Edinburh, and then finally Edinburgh. So now when we say the name Edinburgh, we are really saying the name that came from a lot of different languages and people who lived there long, long ago.
