ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

European Portuguese

Okay kiddo, have you ever heard someone speaking Portuguese? It's a language that people in Portugal, Brazil, and many other countries speak. But did you know that there are two different kinds of Portuguese? One is called "European Portuguese" and the other is "Brazilian Portuguese".

European Portuguese is spoken mostly in Portugal, which is a country in Europe. It's different from Brazilian Portuguese because of the way they pronounce some words, the grammar rules they follow, and the slang words they use.

For example, in European Portuguese they pronounce the letter "S" differently than in Brazilian Portuguese. They also have some words that are different or used in a different way. For instance, they say "obrigado" instead of "obrigada" to say thank you if they are male. If they are female, they say "obrigada".

So if you ever go to Portugal or talk to someone from there, try to listen carefully and you might notice some differences in how they speak Portuguese compared to Brazilian Portuguese.
