Evolutionary linguistics is the study of how language changes over time, similar to how animals evolve over time. It studies the different aspects of language, like the sound of words, their meanings and how words are put together in a sentence, to see how they have changed over time. It might also try to figure out why language has changed over time. One way it does this is by looking at the historical records of different languages, to see how they changed and how one language might be related to another.
