ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Executable

An executable is like a magic spell that makes your computer do something. Just like a wizard has to say the right words and wave their wand in a certain way to cast a spell, programmers have to write a special type of computer code that can be turned into an executable.

When you double-click on an executable, it tells your computer to start doing a certain task or program. It could be something like opening a program, starting a game or even a virus.

But just like a wizard needs to make sure they're using the right spell at the right time, you also need to make sure you only use executables you trust or recognize, because sometimes bad people can disguise harmful programs as legitimate executables to try to trick you into running them. So if you're ever unsure, it's best to double-check with a grown-up or expert before using an executable.
