ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Extended AM broadcast band

Okay kiddo, let me explain what the extended AM broadcast band (sometimes called extended medium wave band) is. You might know that AM radio stations use frequencies in the range of 520 kHz to 1610 kHz to broadcast their programs to listeners. Well, the extended AM broadcast band means that some countries have added more frequencies to this range, so there are now more stations that can broadcast on AM radio.

Think of it like this- imagine you have a big box with different colored marbles in it. The regular AM broadcast band is like when you're only allowed to use the blue marbles for your game, but the extended AM broadcast band is like when you get to use some extra green and red marbles too. This means you have more choices and can make different games with different patterns of marbles.

The extended AM broadcast band was introduced mainly because there were lots of people who wanted to get involved in broadcasting but there weren't enough available frequencies in the regular AM band. Plus, it means that more listeners can have access to different kinds of programs, news, music, and other goodies that AM radio stations offer.

So there you have it, the extended AM broadcast band is like having more colors of marbles to play with, giving more choice to broadcasters and listeners alike!
