ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Extragalactic astronomy

Hi there little one! Today we are going to learn about something called extragalactic astronomy! So, you know how we live on planet Earth which is part of a solar system called the Milky Way galaxy? Well, there are billions and billions of other galaxies out there in space just like ours!

Extragalactic astronomy is the study of these other galaxies that are outside of our own Milky Way. Scientists who study this field use special telescopes and tools to learn more about these galaxies, their shapes, sizes, and how they move.

One of the most important things scientists have learned from extragalactic astronomy is that galaxies are all moving away from each other! This is called the "expansion of the universe" and it helps us understand how the universe was formed and how it has changed over time.

Scientists also study things called "active galactic nuclei" which are like supercharged energy centers found in some of these galaxies. By studying these active galactic nuclei, scientists can learn more about black holes which are super dense and powerful objects found in the centers of some galaxies.

Overall, extragalactic astronomy helps us learn more about the universe beyond our own galaxy and all the incredible things happening out there in the vastness of space!
