ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Eye exam

An eye exam is when you go to see a special doctor called an eye doctor, or an optometrist. They check your eyes to make sure they are working correctly and that you can see things clearly.

First, you will sit down in a chair and the eye doctor will ask you questions about how well you can see, if you’ve noticed any problems, and if you have any glasses or contact lenses.

Next, the eye doctor will shine a light in your eyes to check your eye health. This light helps them see inside your eye and make sure everything looks normal.

Then, you will be asked to look at a chart with letters on it. The letters get smaller as you go down the chart, and the eye doctor will ask you to read them out loud. They will cover one of your eyes and then the other, to see how well each of them can see.

After this, the eye doctor will use a special machine called a phoropter to adjust some lenses and see what combination helps you see the letters more clearly. This tells them if you need glasses or if you need to change your current glasses prescription.

Lastly, the eye doctor may use a special machine that takes a picture of your retina, which is the part of the eye that helps you see. This helps them see if everything is healthy and working as it should be.

Overall, an eye exam helps make sure you can see clearly and helps catch any problems with your eyes before they get worse.
