ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Fáinne

Okay kiddo, have you ever seen a little circle made out of gold or silver that people wear on their clothes in Irish culture? Well, that little circle is called a fáinne (pronounced "fawn-ya").

It's like a secret symbol that shows people you can speak Irish, which is a really cool language. If you have a fáinne, it means you can speak Irish and you're proud of it. It's kind of like a medal or a badge that shows you have a special skill, like when you get a trophy for being good at sports or a sticker for doing a good job in class.

The fáinne has been around for a really long time, like maybe even a hundred years! People used to wear them to show they could speak Irish when it wasn't very popular to do so. But now, lots of people in Ireland speak Irish and wear fáinne to show their love of the language and culture.

So if you ever see someone wearing a little circle on their shirt or jacket, you can ask them if it's a fáinne, and if they're really cool, they might even teach you some Irish words!
