Hey kiddo! Do you know what floss is? It's not the string that we use for tying things up. This floss is actually used to clean our teeth!
Okay, so you know how we brush our teeth every day to keep them clean and healthy? Well, sometimes when we eat, tiny pieces of food get stuck between our teeth and brushing just isn't enough to get rid of them. That's where floss comes in!
Floss is a thin, string-like product that is made from either nylon or silk. We use it to get in between our teeth and remove any leftover food particles or plaque (that's the sticky stuff that can cause cavities).
Here's how to use it: First, take a long piece of floss and wrap one end around your index finger on one hand, and the other end around the other index finger. Hold the floss tightly between your thumbs and index fingers. Next, carefully slide the floss between your teeth, gently rubbing it up and down on each side. Be sure to get all the way down to the gums, but don't press too hard or you could hurt them! Once you've finished one tooth, move on to the next and use a fresh section of floss each time.
Flossing is really important for keeping our teeth healthy and preventing cavities, so it's a good idea to do it every day along with brushing!
