Facies
Imagine you're playing with Play-Doh. You can make different shapes like a ball, a snake, or even a castle! BUT, if you mix different colors together, you can make a whole new color! That's kind of what facies is like, but instead of Play-Doh, we're talking about rocks.
Rocks can come in different kinds too, like sandstone, limestone, or shale. Just like Play-Doh, these rocks can mix together too! When different rocks mix together, they can create a new type of rock that looks different from the ones it came from. This is called facies!
So, if you were to take a bunch of sandstone and mix it with a little bit of shale, it would make a new rock that looks different from just sandstone or shale alone. This new rock type would have its own facies! Scientists look at these different facies to learn and understand the history of the earth and how it has changed over time.
