ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Fall back and forward

Have you noticed that sometimes the sun stays out longer and sometimes it goes down earlier? This happens because the Earth spins around and around the sun.

In some parts of the world, people have decided to change their clocks twice a year to help us adjust to these different times of daylight. This is called "falling back" and "springing forward".

When we "fall back", it means we set our clocks back one hour in the fall when the days are getting shorter. This means it will get darker earlier in the day, but we get an extra hour of sleep!

When we "spring forward", it means we set our clocks ahead one hour in the spring when the days are getting longer. This means it will stay light outside longer, but we lose one hour of sleep!

So now you know why we change our clocks twice a year and what it means to "fall back" and "spring forward"!
