ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Far-sightedness

Far-sightedness is when it's hard to see things that are close up, but easier to see things that are far away. It's like looking through a camera lens that is focused on something far away, but when you try to focus on something that is closer, it becomes blurry.

This happens because the eye doesn't bend the light the right way to focus it on the retina, which is like a movie screen at the back of your eye. Instead, the light is focused behind the retina, which makes things close-up look fuzzy.

People who are far-sighted might have trouble reading or doing up-close activities like sewing or writing, but they can usually see things in the distance pretty well.

Luckily, there are things we can do to help people who are far-sighted. They can wear eyeglasses with special lenses that help the eye bend the light the right way, and they can also wear contact lenses. Some people might also choose to have surgery to fix their far-sightedness.
