ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Fiber-optic cable

Have you ever seen a straw that you use to drink liquids from? Well, a fiber-optic cable is like a very thin, very long straw made out of glass or plastic.

When you send information through a cable, like when you type on a computer, there are tiny electric signals that travel through the cable. But instead of electric signals, fiber-optic cables use light signals. The cable is so thin that the light can travel through it easily and really fast!

Think of it like a secret passageway for light that travels through the glass straw at incredible speeds. The light can carry things like sound or video signals.

When you want to send information from one place to another, you might use a fiber-optic cable to do it. You can send the signal from your computer to your friend's computer that's far away, and it will get there super fast because the light can travel super fast through the fiber-optic cable.
