ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Filesystem Hierarchy Standard

The filesystem hierarchy standard is a way of organizing how files and folders are stored on computers. It's like how you would organize a kitchen. The fridge is the highest level, and all of the other things like the oven, cabinets, plates and cutlery live inside it. On a computer, the highest level is called the root directory, and all of the other folders and files live inside it. For example, you might have a folder called "documents" inside the root directory, and inside that might be folders for your music, photos, and other files. This way your computer knows where to find all the different things you've stored in it.
