ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Fils (currency)

Okay kiddo, so you know when we go to the store and we buy things, we usually use money to pay for it, right? Well, in some places, they use a different kind of money called fils!

Fils are like little tiny coins that are used in some countries in the Middle East, like the United Arab Emirates. One fils is worth a very small amount of money, kind of like how one penny is worth a small amount of money in the United States.

Sometimes, when we buy things, the price is not a whole number like 1 or 2, but it has some numbers after the decimal point, like 1.50 or 2.75. In those cases, we might use fils to make up the difference in the price.

For example, say you want to buy a toy that costs 5.25 Dirhams (that's the name of the currency they use in the UAE). But all you have is a 5 Dirham bill, which is not enough to pay for the toy. So instead, you could give the cashier your 5 Dirham bill plus some fils coins to make up the rest of the price.

Sometimes, people might also use fils to make exact change when they don't have the exact bills or coins they need. It's kind of like a puzzle trying to figure out what combination of fils coins will add up to the right amount of money!
