ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Filtering problem

Imagine you have a big bowl of mixed-up candies. But wait! Some of those candies are gross, like the ones with yucky flavors or hard centers that hurt your teeth. You don't want to eat those candies. So, you need to take them out of the bowl and only keep the good ones. That's what filtering does - it helps you separate the good things from the bad things.

Now imagine you have a big bowl of water, but this time it's not mixed with candies. Instead, it's mixed with dirt, leaves, and other things you don't want to drink. Just like how you filtered the candies, you can filter the water too. You can use a special tool, like a filter or a strainer, to remove all the dirt and leaves and make the water clean and safe to drink.

In the adult world, filtering has a lot of other uses too. For example, we can use filters in our email to sort out spam messages and keep only the important ones. We can use filters in our search engines to find exactly what we are looking for on the internet. And we can use filters in our cameras to make our pictures look better or to block out unwanted light.

So, anytime you want to separate good things from bad things, or when you want to make something better by removing things you don't need, you can use a filter. Just like how you filtered your candies and your water, grown-ups use filters for lots of other things too!
