ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Five species of grain

Grains are tiny seeds that we use to make food. There are many different kinds of grains, but we'll talk about five of the most common ones: wheat, rice, corn, oats, and barley.

Wheat is a type of grain that is often used to make bread. The seeds are ground up into flour, which is then mixed with water and other ingredients to make dough. The dough is baked in the oven, and that's how we get bread!

Rice is another type of grain that we eat a lot. It's often boiled in water and served as a side dish with other foods. Some people also use it to make sushi, which is a type of Japanese food that's wrapped in seaweed.

Corn is a type of grain that's often used in the United States to make different kinds of food. We can eat it off the cob, or it can be ground up and turned into things like cornmeal, cornbread, or tortillas.

Oats are a type of grain that's often used to make oatmeal, a hot cereal that many people enjoy for breakfast. They can also be used to make things like granola bars or cookies.

Barley is a type of grain that's often used to make things like soup or beer. It's cooked in water or broth and can be mixed with veggies or meat to create a tasty soup. And, as we know, beer is a fermented drink made using barley and other grains.

Those are just a few examples of the many different kinds of grains out there. Each one can be used in different ways to make all sorts of delicious foods!
