ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Five stages of grief

Okay kiddo, sometimes people get really sad when they lose someone or something they really cared about. That's called grief. You know how you get sad when you lose your favorite toy? Well, grown-ups get sad too when they lose something they loved.

When you're feeling really sad, it can feel like you're never going to be happy again. But it's important to know that it's a process, which means that you won't feel sad forever.

There are five stages of grief that people usually go through. The first stage is called denial, where you can't believe what happened and you might feel like it's not really true. It's kind of like when you spill something and say "that didn't happen."

The second stage is anger. Sometimes when things don't go the way we want them to, we can get mad. When we feel grief, we might get angry because we don't want to feel sad.

The third stage is bargaining, where you might try to make deals or promises to bring back what was lost. It's like when you say to your mom "if I promise to clean my room every day, can I have my toy back?"

The fourth stage is depression. This is when you feel really sad and you might cry a lot. It's okay to feel this way, but it's also important to take care of yourself and reach out for help if you need it.

And finally, the fifth stage is acceptance. This is when you start to feel okay with what happened, and you can remember the good times with the person or thing that you lost without feeling so sad anymore.

Remember kiddo, it's okay to feel sad and it's important to talk to someone you trust about how you're feeling. The process of grief takes time, but it gets better.
